Full Version: Fan mod for a G70

Hoping for some help here as the fan switch I have tried for my G70 isn't working. I have followed the instructions as per John's (from avsforum) homesite:

http://johnhwman.chez-alice.fr//index.html

John had put me onto SilenX fans as an updated fan to the version he described in the link. I couldn't obtain the 38mm deep version he suggested and went for 25mm deep version (the 25mm version also moves more air than the version John recommended in a succesful mod he undertook on another G70).

However when trying to use the SilenX fans they start for a second before the pj switches off with error code indicating a problem with the fans. The only thing I can possibly see different between the fans that worked for John and the version I am using (other than depth) is that John's version are 12V/2.4W and my version is also 12V but with a lower wattage (SilenX's webiste is down at the moment so cannot provide the specific detail).

Greg referred me here from avsforum and in his post discussed his Barco fan mod and changes to mounting etc - in a G70 the fans are on silicon mounts with a plastic cage before being mounted to the pj - I believe the noise is generated by the fan motors and volume of air being moved and not from any vibration type interaction.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Stephen.

I can confirm that the current draw for the fans I am trying to use is 0.18A compared to 0.24A for the version John used.

The mount is a major cause of noise. You need to keep the orginal sony fans because they have a feedback.

Using custom fans is a bad idea also a quieter fan is just one that runs at lower RPMS. Why replace when you can just mod the power to the existing fans and the existing fans are a proper fit for the mounting. I recommend keeping the signal wire the same and using a 3-5W resistor in series with the power feed of the fan

There are 3 wires

Power
GND
Pulse ( To tell the projector the fan is on)

On the power section use a 27-30 ohm to start. If still to loud move up to 50-70ohms.

This will make it much quieter without lowering the fan air output.

Thanks Greg

Not being too electronically capable when you say 'in series' does that mean cutting the power feed and then inserting (soldering) the resistor in between the two wire ends?

YES

Dont do the other way!

its same wire the RED PLUS

-------RESISTOR---------

Do not put the resistor inbetween the red and black.

Thanks Greg - I'll see if I can get some resistors from the local electronics store - is there a particular type you would recommend.
