I have a BarcoData 708, a great projector but the fan noise can be quite intrusive, especially with movies that are heavy with dialogue. Is there a mod to reduce fan noise?

YES the NMB fans used are quite good. Barco engineers these projectors to opperate in very hot enviroments.

The best thing to do is put a 3-5W resistor in series with each fan. Start out with a 25 ohm and see if that improves it.

You might need to move to a 75 ohm. Be very carefull when doing this make sure you still have a nice airflow in most cases you can bring the 12V voltage down to aprox 7v and still have a very good airflow with much less noise.

I used series resistors in my BG500 before I build hushbox.
I think those was about 10ohm resistors and dropped voltage about 2V.

Does 708 have fan speed adjustment by temperature, like other Barco projector?

If it have, then it is good idea to also lead cooler air near intake fans. Otherwise projector circulate hot air in ceiling and fans run faster...

the 120x has thermo resistors. I sold so many 700 but I totaly forgot if they had thermo- resistors.

I installed 10 ohm 1watt resistors inline with the Barco 708 fans and that lowered the fan speed enough to significantly lower noise, but maintains very good air flow. Much quieter! Thanks.

Cool yes and its easy. There is no reason to replace the entire fan when you can use a cheap resistor!

1 watt might be a little small

I like to use 3w. Is the resistor getting warm?

Start out with a 10 ohm. I typically use a 22-27 ohm.

There are no better fans you can buy. Barco used the best so a simple resistor is the best solution.

No Not at all. Barco units were designed to stay cool in 100 degree + temps. IF you keep your room at
70F then you can lower the fans without an issue. You will not overheat the projector if you keep it around 10-22 ohms. We have tested with a thermal probe.

Hi all,

I just tried 22 ohms on my BG801s fans and it wasn't enough because the unit eventually warms up and cranks the fan speed up. Added another 15 ohms for 37 total and it's good. Dead silent on start-up then moderately quiet when warm.
